Initially, the weights and bias are assigned random values. The perceptron processes an input and produces an output using the following steps:
1. Multiply each input by its corresponding weight: weighted_sum = (color * w1) + (shape * w2).
2. Add the bias term: weighted_sum = weighted_sum + b.
3. Apply an activation function to the weighted sum. Let's say we use a step function: if weighted_sum >= 0, the output is 1 (representing "apple"); otherwise, the output is 0 (representing "orange").
During training, we need to adjust the weights and bias to minimize the errors made by the perceptron. The perception rule helps us achieve this by updating the weights and bias based on the errors encountered.
Let's consider a training example of an apple: the expected output is 1. Suppose the current weights and bias produce an output of 0.5. The error in this case is the difference between the expected output and the perceptron's output: error = expected_output - perceptron_output = 1 - 0.5 = 0.5.
Now, we update the weights and bias using the perception rule:
1. Update the bias: new_bias = current_bias + learning_rate * error.
2. Update the weights: new_weight = current_weight + learning_rate * error * input.
The learning rate is a hyperparameter that determines the size of the weight and bias adjustments. It controls how quickly the perceptron adapts to new information.
Let's assume our learning rate is 0.1. The update process would look like this:
New bias = current_bias + (0.1 * 0.5) = current_bias + 0.05.
New w1 = current_w1 + (0.1 * 0.5 * color_input) = current_w1 + (0.05 * color_input).
New w2 = current_w2 + (0.1 * 0.5 * shape_input) = current_w2 + (0.05 * shape_input).
By repeating this process for a sufficient number of training examples and iterations, the perceptron adjusts its weights and bias to make more accurate predictions. This is how the perception rule helps an ANN learn and improve its performance.
Note that this example is simplified for clarity, and in practice, more complex activation functions, training algorithms, and multiple layers of perceptrons are used to build more powerful neural networks.
